Organize Design Assets

A collection of sorting prompts tailored for designers and creative teams who work with assets across multiple tools (Photoshop, Illustrator, Figma, Sketch, SVG exports) and need to maintain order across projects, clients, and deliverable types. These prompts help impose structure on the organic chaos of a working design directory.

Sort by Project

Sort these design files into folders by project name. Infer the project from the filename — look for project codes, campaign names, or descriptive prefixes. Group related assets (mockups, icons, exports) together under each project. Put anything that does not clearly belong to a project into an _Unsorted folder.
Expected result: Files are grouped into project-specific folders based on naming conventions. Related assets like mockups, icons, and exports live together under each project. Ambiguous files land in _Unsorted for manual review.

Sort by File Type

Organize these design files into folders based on their file type and the tool they belong to. Create folders for Photoshop (PSD), Illustrator (AI), Figma (FIG), Sketch (SKETCH), SVG exports, raster images (PNG, JPG, TIFF, WEBP), and Documents (PDF, TXT). Keep the original filenames intact.
Expected result: Every file is placed in a folder matching its format. Designers can quickly find all Photoshop working files, all vector exports, or all raster deliverables without scanning through a mixed directory.

Sort by Client or Brand

Sort these design files into folders by client or brand name. Infer the client from the filename — look for company names, brand abbreviations, or client codes at the start or end of the filename. Within each client folder, keep all asset types together. Files with no identifiable client should go into an Internal folder.
Expected result: Files are organized into per-client folders so designers can quickly locate everything related to a specific account. Internal or personal work is separated out. Handoff to clients or account managers becomes straightforward.

Customization Tips

  • Add a version number convention (e.g., _v1, _v2, _final) and ask Sortio to group versions together under each project or client.
  • If your team uses project codes (e.g., PRJ-042), mention the code format in your prompt so Sortio can match files more accurately.
  • For teams that deliver across platforms, add sub-folders like Web, Print, and Social within each project or client folder.
  • Combine the "by project" and "by file type" prompts by asking Sortio to sort by project first, then by file type within each project folder.
  • Specify a naming convention in the prompt (e.g., "client_project_asset_version.ext") and ask Sortio to flag files that do not follow it.

Troubleshooting

Problem:

Files with ambiguous names end up in the wrong project or client folder.

Solution:

Add explicit project or client names to your prompt so Sortio has clear labels to match against.

Steps:

  1. 1Review the _Unsorted or Internal folder for misplaced files.
  2. 2Update your prompt to list known project names or client codes, e.g., "Projects include: Homepage Redesign, Q1 Campaign, Mobile App v2."
  3. 3Re-run the sort with the updated prompt.
  4. 4Rename ambiguous source files to include the project or client prefix for future sorts.

Problem:

Exported raster images (PNG, JPG) get separated from their source files (PSD, AI).

Solution:

Use the "Sort by Project" or "Sort by Client" prompt instead of "Sort by File Type" to keep source files and exports together.

Steps:

  1. 1Choose the "Sort by Project" prompt so related files stay grouped.
  2. 2If you need both groupings, ask Sortio to sort by project first and then create sub-folders by file type within each project.
  3. 3Verify that exported files include the same project or client prefix as their source files.

Problem:

Figma files (.fig) are not recognized or are placed in a generic folder.

Solution:

Ensure your files use the .fig extension. If they are exported as .zip or .json, mention this in your prompt.

Steps:

  1. 1Check that Figma exports have the .fig extension.
  2. 2If your workflow produces .fig.zip files, add a note to your prompt: "Treat .fig.zip files as Figma files."
  3. 3Re-run the sort after adjusting the prompt.
